周瑜的如意算盘是：一方面以对曹军作战急需为名,委托诸葛亮在10日之内督造10万枝箭；一方面吩咐工匠故意怠工拖延,并在物料方面给诸葛亮出难题,设置障碍,使诸葛亮不能按期交差.然后周瑜再名正言顺地除掉诸葛亮.圈套布置好的第二天,周瑜就集众将于帐下,并请诸葛亮一起议事.当周瑜提出让诸葛亮在10日之内赶制10万枝箭的要求时,诸葛亮却出人意外地说：“操军即日将至,若候10日,必误大事.”他表示：只须3天的时间,就可以办完复命.周瑜一听大喜,当即与诸葛亮立下了军令状.在周瑜看来,诸葛亮无论如何也不可能在3天之内造出10万枝箭,因此,谙葛亮必死无疑.
诸葛亮告辞以后,周瑜就让鲁肃到诸葛亮处查看动静,打探虚实.诸葛亮一见鲁肃就说：“3日之内如何能造出10万枝箭?还望子敬救我!”忠厚善良的鲁肃回答说：“你自取其祸,教我如何救你?”诸葛亮说：“只望你借给我20只船,每船配置30名军卒,船只全用青布为幔,各束草把千余个,分别树在船的两舷.这一切,我自有妙用,到第三日包管会有10万枝箭.但有一条,你千万不能让周瑜知道.如果他知道了,必定从中作梗,我的计划就很难实现了.”鲁肃虽然答应了诸葛亮的请求,但并不明白诸葛亮的意思.他见到周瑜后,不谈借船之事,只说诸葛亮并不准备造箭用的竹、翎毛、胶漆等物品.周瑜听罢也大惑不解.
诸葛亮向鲁肃借得船只、兵卒以后,按计划准备停当.可是一连两天诸葛亮却毫无动静,直到第三天夜里四更时分,他才秘密地将鲁肃请到船上,并告诉鲁肃要去取箭.鲁肃不解地问：“到何处去取?”诸葛亮回答道：“子敬不用问,前去便知.”鲁肃被弄得莫名其妙,只得陪伴着诸葛亮去看个究竟.
当夜,浩浩江面雾气霏霏,漆黑一片.诸葛亮遂命用长索将20只船连在一起,起锚向北岸曹军大营进发.时至五更,船队已接近曹操的水寨.这时,诸葛亮又教士卒将船只头西尾东一字摆开,横于曹军寨前.然后,他又命令士卒擂鼓呐喊,故意制造了一种击鼓进兵的声势.鲁肃见状,大惊失色,诸葛亮却心底坦然地告诉他说：“我料定,在这浓雾低垂的夜里,曹操决不敢贸然出战.你我尽可放心地饮酒取乐,等到大雾散尽,我们便回.”
