布莲诗博士认为是次海豚普查所搜集的资料对其持续的海豚研究有极大帮助.布莲诗博士称：「是次活动为义工提供一个极佳机会,好让他们知道进行白海豚调查时,如何搜集有关数据及让他们有机会享受置身中华白海豚当中.大量船只及义工参与是次活动,亦使我们有机会在同一时间於香港不同的白海豚生境地搜集有关数据.是次搜集之数据将会与11年前对比,藉以推测海豚数目於过去11年的变化.」
信和集团旗下黄金海岸乡村俱乐部及游艇会亦全力支持是次活动,除替活动招募参加者外,更提供免费停泊位置予参加船只.黄金海岸游艇及乡村俱乐部总经理吴一鸣谓,中华白海豚是他们的亲密邻居.他表示：「黄金海岸乡村俱乐部及游艇会的会员均对中华白海豚有特别感情,因为白海豚经常在水清多鱼的游艇会出没.其中数条海豚更成为黄金海岸的常客,我们的会员更替其中一条白海豚起了一个特别的名字：起喜,即开心及繁盛的意思.此外,我们更於黄金泳滩的一角兴建『黄金海岸海豚广场』,此广场由信和集团资助兴建,广场内有一组高9米、阔6.45米及长11米的巨型海豚雕像,共有三条建造得栩栩如生的海豚.这个广场将於本年稍後时间正式开放.」
白海豚普查於今天正午12时开始,而所有参与船只於12时或以前到达预先指定的地方.普查开始,各义工需观察附近海域是否有白海豚出没,并为有关白海豚作详尽纪录,如白海豚群的大小、有关成员及它们的行为.当基本资料被纪录後,观察船会小心移近白海豚群并替其拍照.整个普查历时一小时,布莲诗博士将於普查後分析所得数据及海豚影像,藉此估计於香港水域中生存的白海豚数目及与11年前所得的数据作对比.
Dr.Lindsay Porter said that the data collected from this event would contribute to her continuing research efforts.“This is a marvellous opportunity for volunteers to see how we collect the data necessary for conservation initiatives as well as to simply enjoy being in the presence of dolphins.The large number of boats and participants also provides us with the unusual opportunity to collect data from throughout the dolphins Hong Kong habitat at the same moment in time.The data collected is comparable to the last census which occurred in 1994.Long term datasets and such comparisons reveal how the population is changing through time.”
Sino Group’s affiliate,the Gold Coast Yacht and Country Club (GCYCC) fully supported the event by providing free berthing for participating yachts and recruiting members to join.Mr.Albert Wu,General Manager of GCYCC said,the Pink Dolphins are their intimate neighbours.
“GCYCC club members have special affections for the dolphins because the clean water and abundance of fish around Gold Coast has made it a magnet for the dolphins.Several of them are ‘frequent visitors’ and yacht club members even named one of them ‘Hei Hei’,which literally means happy and blooming.Our affection for the Pink Dolphin can also be seen in Hong Kong’s first ‘Pink Dolphin Square’ located at the headland of Golden Beach.The square,fully sponsored and constructed by the Sino Group,has a dolphin statue 9 meters high,6.45 meters wide and 11 meters long.It consists of 3 Pink Dolphins,1 large,1 medium and 1 small and the square will be opened later this year..”
The census began at 12 o’clock today,when all boats arrived in their pre-designated areas.The volunteers scanned for dolphins and,once sighted,all details on group size,composition and behaviour were carefully noted.Also,presence of other vessels and their proximity to the dolphins were recorded.Once this basic data was collected,the group was carefully approached and each individual dolphin was photographed.The census lasted for one hour and over the next few weeks,Dr.Porter will study the data and images gathered so that she can determine just how many dolphins were in Hong Kong waters,which individuals they were and how this compares to the last census.
