　　1486年,航海家哥伦布向西班牙国王提出一个大胆的主张,认为按照地圆说,从大西洋向西航行,可以到达中国和印度.这要比东航为近.1492年4月,女王伊萨伯拉与其丈夫斐迪南国王采纳了他的建议.派他以王室名义寻找通向东方的航路,授予他“海军大将”军衔,预封他为“新发现土地”的“世袭总督”.
　　8月3日拂晓,哥伦布三艘帆船、87名水手从巴罗斯港出发,69天后到达巴哈马群岛,他取名为“圣萨尔瓦多”（意为“救世主”）.他以为这就是印度,故而把土民称作“印第安人”.船队继续向南,到达古巴和海地.在那里,他没找到黄金和香料,只看到一些十分落后的又原始的野蛮人与丛林.1493年3月15日,哥伦布离开西印度群岛返回西班牙.以后,他又三次西航到美洲,陆续发现了牙买加、波多黎各、多米尼加等,并到达中美洲的洪都拉斯和巴拿马等地,为西班牙人的殖民事业打下了基础.但直到临死,哥伦布一直为他所发现的是亚洲边缘地区,而不知道那就是“新大陆”.
