目前,我国学英语的学生都这样认为：but for总表示“要不是”,与动词虚拟语气连用；except for总是作“除……之外”解,与动词的陈述语气连用.（《英语语法词典》）四川人民出版社,P.144）上也说：“介词短语but for不表示（except for）“除……之外”,而表示“倘若没有；要不是”的意思.其实这是一个误解.but for与except for都具备上述的两个意思和用法.如：
1.But for you everyone has helped.(LEG)除了你之外,大家都帮忙了.
2.But for a half hour or so for lunch I am here all day.(Yeats)除了大约半小时的午饭时间,我整天都在这里.
3.Except for John,they would all have died.（《初高中英语考点难点详解词典》黑龙江人民出版社,赵振才编著,P.284）要不是因为约翰,他们都已经死了.
