作者秦秀白在《英国英语与美国英语》一书中指出“英语是世界上最广泛运用和影响的语言之一,当今英语之变成英国英语和美国英语.英国英语和美国英语是同一种语言,只不过讲英语的人在使用过程中,由于地理、社会、教育、职业、性别、民族等因素的变化而形成不同特点的语言.”

部分学者认为随着美国自身国力的增强和各个领域的发展,两国人民通过各种媒体的交流增多,两国语言的分化差异也随之减少,美国英语和英国英语的相互合作、相互渗透的速度会日益加快.《英语：国际通用语》的两个作者认为“标准英语”既包含正式语体,也包含非正式语体,只要在用语和语法方面符合标准英语的习惯就可以认为是“标准英语”,这样说来英国和美国也将会有一种共同的“标准语言”,但同时容许次要差异的存在.
