Sometimes we think that is an easy job,but in fact we would feel nervous since we need to communicate with a stranger in another language.When I talked to a foreigner at the first time,all I can say is "how are you" and "hello" some easy expressions,but in fact people can do much better as we have practice many times before.
It would be easier to chat with people with the same mother tongue.At least we can avoid the situation that we would feel embarrased if we make grammar or pronounciation mistakes during our English converstation.Sometimes we make Chinese pronounciation mistakes for fun.We can express our feeling and communicate with a stranger without any barriers.

When people expose to those similar matters, they are easily find something in common and then get on well with others through nice conversations. However, having a joy chat with foreigners can be a very difficult and complicated matter. Sometimes we have a tough conversation with foreigners is not only because we almost shared nothing in common but also depends on other factors. For example, people's anxiety contributes to quality of conversation. The more anxious a person could be, the low quality of conversation it is, especially the first time when you spoke to a foreigner. Since you and foreigners have nothing in common, you may concern the feelings of them, or if your first impression is good enough to them. Thus you may feel too nervous to continue to talk.
Fortunately, it can be improved by frequent contact. Though your foreign friends and you don't live in the same way, we are sharing the same planet, which I think is a great subject to talk.
